Chris Lake @ Pacha NYC (03.22.14) [Event Recap]

It was quite a treat to catch three of my favorite, super talented and super friendly DJ’s at Pacha NYC this past weekend. As part of promoting his new single in North America, Chris Lake took the decks at the legendary NYC megaclub with Moska and Helena. Lake has been up to big things, after completing his “Rising” Tour with TJR, Nom De Strip, and more in fall of 2013, he just released a catchy new single with a music video and another U.S. tour to match, “Helium.” Not to mention the charity event he just performed in California just days before this gig with Nervo, Michael Woods, Funkagenda, and more, to benefit the International Marine Mammal Project.
We kicked off the night with newcomer Moska, who is a Colombian California native who has been rising to fame since his collaboration remix with Tiesto last year.

His electro set featured some crowd favorites like Axwell’s “Nothing But Love” but ranged to more obscure remixes such as one of Fake Blood’s “I Think I Like It” which is an old favorite of mine. Chris Lake played his usual hits, of course his latest production “Helium” and more notably his fresh new remix of Indiana’s “Solo Dancing,” which is a great new tune. He took it deeper with a few tracks such as London Grammar’s “Hey Now” and even back oldschool with Pink Floyd’s “Brick In The Wall.” The night wouldn’t have been complete without a photo with the man himself, and then DJ Helena closed out the night.

Afrojack makes an unforgettable Hakkasan LV debut [News]

© Al Powers,

When Hakkasan grabbed a bunch of new artists to stack their residency list, they made sure to get one of the bigger names in dance music in Afrojack. Well, the time finally came this past friday for the Dutch master to grace his presence at the hot MGM Grand nightclub.

© Al Powers,

With anticipation building from the crowd, Afrojack hopped on the decks during primetime, around 1:30. He wasted no time wowing the crowd with his music, and added to the allure of the first “Afrojack experience” at Hakkasan was the appearance of two male contortionists. During his set, a dozen of Hakkasan Nightclub’s cocktail waitresses joined Nick in the booth to present him a rather large bottle of champagne. In classic fashion, Afrojack took the bottle and sprayed it all over the crowd. Additionally, two new LED screens were unveiled at the rather popular club, which displayed stunning graphics and imagery. Just the first of many Afrojack events to take over nights at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas is in for a treat for the months to come.

The most sought-after party of WMC is here: mau5trap vs PRYDA [Event]

mau5trap vs PRYDA
Our mau5 ears shot straight up when we first caught wind of this elusive event just over a week ago via twitter. The mau5trap account tweeted a flyer that simply read “mau5trap vs PRYDA 03.27.14″ and left us all in a whirlwind as we were already scurrying to make a decision on what event to attend that night. Amongst all of the amazing lineups planned for that day, this one solidified the deal. The party will be held at a pop up arena at Ice Palace Studios in Downtown Miami from 10PM to 5AM, with no further details revealed, just a hint that there will be “special gue5ts.” We can only speculate that the record label head honchos deadmau5 and Eric Prydz will be in attendance. Will the current artists such as Hot Mouth, Tommy Trash, or Nom De Strip be going against Pryda friends Fehrplay and Jeremy Olander? Will they be spinning b2b? Perhaps testpilot will go back to back with Cirez D? We can’t wait to find out. Tickets for the 21+ event will go on sale Monday March 10th via Wantickets, in the meantime, peep some brand new Deadmau5 as he experiments with his techno moniker in Testpilot.

Electric Daisy Carnival New York 2014 Lineup Revealed [News]

Less than an hour after Mysteryland uncovered the blanket, the lineup for EDC New York was revealed to the public. With even bigger names this year, EDC is making all efforts to trump Electric Zoo as the top festival in the tri-state area. While the zoo has some time to recruit, let’s break down what Insomniac Events has in store for Memorial Day weekend.

There are many familiar names in this year’s group. Superstars Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Carl Cox, and Steve Angello continue to remain faithful since the first edition back in 2012. And while those are some heavy hitters, Insomniac went above and beyond this year stealing Tiesto, Hardwell, Boys Noize, Krewella, Tommy Trash, and Sander van Doorn from Electric Zoo. We’re not sure as to how they managed to pull this one off, but the Randall’s Island faithful are surely in shock right now. With the move back to MetLife Stadium, and all this new added talent, EDC NY is rivaling Mysteryland USA for this coming Memorial Day Weekend. And as the ticket sales start flying, it’s decision time for all of you festival-goers. What’s it going to be? EDC NY or Mysterland USA?

‘Heartbeat’ Tour Takes On Webster Hall NY feat. Myon & Shane 54 with Late Night Alumni [Event Recap]

This past weekend I stepped out on the town to check out the Myon & Shane 54 featuring Late Night Alumni show. Taking a break from the usual upscale NYC dwellings such as Marquee and Lavo, the VIP at Webster Hall was the next best thing, and it surely did not disappoint. The top shelf open bar was a plus, as well as a decent energetic crowd. Late Night Alumni took the stage around 12:30AM. They blew my expectations out of the water with their live performance.

SFX Entertainment being sued, Co-Founders allege they were ‘Ripped Off’ [News]

According to Deckstar president and co-founder Lawrence Vavra, Disco Donnie Estopinal’s manager Paolo Moreno, and his brother Gabriel, SFX Entertainment has allegedly not stepped up to the plate when it was time to give the co-founders their due shares. The three claim to be integral parts of the company who pointed CEO Robert Sillerman in the right direction in regards to purchasing the right festivals, ticketing companies and more worldwide. Meanwhile they have made some serious accusations against Robert including breaching contracts and fraud as the complaint reads:

“Had they known that Sillerman’s true intentions were to use plaintiffs’ strategy, information, connections and access for his own gain, without granting plaintiffs any significant ownership interest in the venture, plaintiffs would not have entered into any agreement with Sillerman, and would not have undertaken to execute on the strategy for the benefit of SFX.”

It seems like the three’s claims have some kind of merit as they would have more knowledge about the EDM industry than the average person and allege that Robert was supposed to provide most of the financial backing while they instructed him on acquiring seven of the eight properties listed in SFX’ Securities and Exchange Commission filings for the IPO this past October.

In response we reached out to SFXE for comment in which they replied with the short statement in their press release:

“We will have no comment, other than to say we will vigorously defend this baseless lawsuit.”

Let’s hope this gets resolved quickly as shares of $SFXE were near a 52 week low today trading at approximately $7.76 in light of the lawsuit. Investors should be weary of jumping ship as the coming festival season should boost up that price again.

Groove Cruise X 2014 (Miami –> Cozumel) [Review]

Coming in not knowing exactly what to expect, I packed my bags and flew out to the ever sunny Miami Beach, Florida for the 10th Annual, but my very first, Groove Cruise. Upon checking in and then sipping on some coffee, I made some new media friends before the press luncheon and cruise tour. Exhausted from my travels, I took off and woke up just in time to hear the announcement that the ship was about to sail off…

Guy-Manuel and Thomas also put on their second TV performance ever performing “Get Lucky” to the delight of dance music faithfuls around the globe.

Other notable electronic awards which were handed out before the show went out to Zedd for the Best Dance Recording with Foxes on “Clarity” and Cedric Gervais after his massive remix to Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness.” Lets hope next year is an even bigger one for dance music at the Grammys as it continues to grow and gain respect amongst the music industry’s finest artists.

Alesso’s Uprising: NYE @ Pier 94 New York [Review]

That time of year where everyone has their night decided over months in advance, or is scrambling for last minute plans, New Year’s Eve is always a special time for nightlife around the globe. Here in New York, we had the pleasure of attending one of NYC’s best venues in Pier 94 for Alesso’s Uprising Tour.  Accompanying the head honcho were performances by Don Dibalo, Deniz Koyu and Clockwork. When one of dance music’s biggest names takes on the big apple you know you’re in for a treat.

Hakkasan LV announces star studded 2014 lineup [News]

After a successful year in bringing in some major acts, Hakkasan nightclub at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino is here to announce their all-star lineup yet again.  All of the returning residents brighten up the cast from the start. Those coming back are Tiësto, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Hardwell, Danny Avila, Bingo Players, Dada Life, MarkEteson, Fergie (DJ), NERVO, R3hab, Eva Shaw and Michael Woods.

However, it is the new names they have managed to grab that add fuel to this already massive fire. Taking household names from competing clubs, Hakkasan has bolstered its roster with Above & Beyond, Afrojack, Sunnery James & Ryan Maricano, and W&W.  They also plan to have several special guests throughout the year. One is Moby, a Grammy award-winning legend in the music industry.  Hakksan starts this highly anticpated year with the birthday celebrations on January 17th and 18th with Calvin Harris and Tiësto respectively. They couldn’t have kicked off their calendar any better.

Additionally, the MGM Grand’s Wet Republic Ultra Pool, will feature a handful of the above names, including Hardwell and Steve Aoki. To say that Hakkasan has upped the ante, is an understatement. With top tier competitors, such as Marquee and XS, Hakkasan is certainly heading to the front of the race, making the MGM Grand the place to be this year.

SFX Entertainment & Clear Channel partner up, set to bring more EDM to broadcast radio [News]

After more than a decade since selling the massive promotion company SFX Entertainment, Chairman and CEO Robert Sillerman has yet again struck a major deal with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. Being one of the leading media companies in America with a greater reach in the U.S. than any other outlet, this deal will allow BeatPort’s top 20 to be featured more on the mainstream stations and will include a national DJ/Producer contest as well as an original live event series. “The framework we have established with Clear Channel, whose stations include KIIS-FM and Z100, brings the electronic music category to a broader audience and delivers on what we believe the young music consumer wants today.  It also allows us to amplify the promotion of DJ/Producers who are the life-blood of our industry” says Sillerman.

As for the DJ contest, the winner will have the special chance to appear at Mysteryland (SFX’s newest baby) on Memorial Day 2013 weekend at the original setting of Woodstock NY and will also be getting a recording contract with a major record label.

Ever wanted to bet on EDM? SFX Entertainment ($SFXE) is your best shot. After acquiring festivals, event planners, promotion companies, and ticketing outlets around the globe, there seems to be no stopping Sillerman from bringing SFX to the top as he did with Live Nation who is now seen as their biggest competitor following the purchase of 50% stake in Insomniac. Lets hope the arrival of electronic music into the core of the main stream will help it more than hurt it.

Alesso: Uprising @ Pier 94 NYC for NYE (12.31.13) [Event]

20131227-185317.jpgIf you’ve purchased a ticket to Pier 94′s New Year’s Eve special, you are in for a big treat. With Avicii and Afrojack ringing in 2012 and 2013, respectively, Alesso is here to close out this year and send us in to 2014 on a high note. Alesso won’t be alone, and he will be bringing a long an all-star cast to co-star this production. With Don diablo, Deniz Koyu, and Clockwork on the bill, pier 94 will surely be rocking all night long into the early hours of the morning.

Don Diablo is certainly a name for you to note, as he’s had an excellent second half of 2013 with the very popular Axtone hit ‘Starlight’. The next act, Deniz Koyu, will be playing at his second straight NYE show in NYC, but this time in one of Manhattan’s biggest venues. Playing many times in the Empire State, Koyu is certainly an fan favorite here. Perhaps what mixes this bunch up the most is Clockwork. Known for his extremely creative mashups, Mr. Steinway is one of the more diverse artists out there, and we are hoping to hear some beats associated with his “RL Grime” moniker as well.

As your main headliner for the night, all eyes will be on Alesso when he takes the stage. The “pretty boy” has come along way since pairing up with Sebasitan Ingrosso on the monstrous ‘Calling’, and in just a couple years he’s become the main attraction on NYE in NYC. We’ve been a big supporter of Alessandro since his first Electric Zoo, and he has never disappointed the NY faithful with past mind-blowing performances at EDC and Governor’s Island. Tickets are still available for purchase. Get yours now before it’s too late and hope to see you there!
